Slim zijn ze, die heren van het Belgische Dedicted. Laten ze je eerst geloven dat ze eenvoudige progressieve thrash metal maken – je gaat je dan al afvragen of dat hoesontwerp wel past bij de muziek van de heren – brengen ze mede daardoor je verwachtingspatroon naar een absoluut dieptepunt, maar slaan ze je vervolgens wel kei-en keihard om de oren. 'Argonauts' is namelijk een bijzonder vernuftig schijfje geworden dat je het ene moment ademloos laat luisteren (zoals in de afsluitende titeltrack) en het andere moment het heroïsche gevoel bezorgt dat je de hele wereld aan kan (het ijzersterke 'Heretic'). Het is te eenvoudig om te refereren aan het Franse Hacride, aangezien Adrien Grosset van de Fransozen aan het album heeft meegewerkt, maar toch zal het liefhebbers van die band evenals groepen als Textures, Gojira en Strapping Young Lad aanspreken. De hard/zacht-dynamiek is door de afwisseling van de grunts van frontman Mehdi en de atmosferische, cleane zanglijnen van drummer Jason die overigens nooit te 'cheesy' overkomen ongekend. De productie staat als een huis en het songmateriaal intrigeert van begin tot eind, iets wat ook geldt voor de thematiek. Alles klopt gewoon, uiteindelijk zelfs het artwork! Dit vijftal mag wat mij betreft zo de festivalweide ingejaagd worden. Eens kijken of ze live net zo slim zijn. (BN)

Eens lekker lui zijn en niets doen: het kan heerlijk zijn. Maar Dedicted is – tijdens de lange stilte rond de groep – altijd bezig gebleven. Jaren voorbereiding gingen aan deze 'Argonauts' vooraf, en die moet de groep dan ook definitief op de kaart zetten. Ondanks de weinige optredens staat Dedicted nu al op de affiche van Graspop, en dat is veelbelovend … Kan dit schijfje echt zo goed zijn?
Opener The Revenant laat er geen gras over groeien. Met zijn ijzersterke compositie, gewaagde tempowisselingen en vlotte mix tussen cleane zang en screams wordt je aandacht helemaal opgeëist. Want dit debuutalbum is veel meer dan een opgewaardeerde demo. Dedicted speelt namelijk erg technische metal waar onnatuurlijke ritmes de kern van uitmaken. Een beetje zoals Meshuggah, al staat die band toch een klasse hoger.
Meshuggah als referentie aanhalen impliceert natuurlijk ook dat niet iedereen 'Argonauts' zal smaken. Je moet immers de structuur vinden binnen de wanorde die je initieel hoort en daar ook nog eens van houden. Eens je echter voorbij die drempel bent, omarm je de chaos en wordt je als luisteraar ongetwijfeld geboeid door de totaalklank.
Bovenop die uitzinnige structuren weet Dedicted zich ook te presenteren als een schitterende moderne metalband. Rebirth toont heel even de rustige kant van het vijftal zonder zeemzoet te worden en al even snel staan de scherpe riffs weer op de voorgrond, begeleid door een furieuze ritmesectie en dito zang. Titeltrack en afsluiter Argonauts beëindigt de cd op een schitterende manier, door de lat net een trapje hoger te leggen. Zoals het hoort!
Wie een hedendaagse metalplaat wel kan smaken, wordt door Dedicted verwend. Want niet alleen is 'Argonauts' om de vingers van af te likken, het is tevens het bewijs dat ook de moeilijkere muziekgenres niet vergeten worden door lokale muzikanten. Als dit debuut slechts het begin is van een herboren Dedicted, dan kan je nog veel prachtmateriaal verwachten!

Belgian Metallers Dedicted are amongst the midst of exciting times, a new album released on Shiver Records and also an appearance at Grasspop under their belts. Very nice going. On the album front, "Argonauts" is a grinding and tantalizing look into this bands impressive repetoire, and not content to sound like ever other band out there, Dedicted play how they want and sound truly superb. The vocals are aggressive, the riff-age sporadic but masterful, and the drumming and bass play is sturdy and packs great rhythm. I can't say enough about dedicted whose "Argonauts" album is set to wow Belgium and beyond.

Die Argonauten gehen in der griechischen Mythologie auf die Suche nach dem sagenhaften goldenen Vlies. Benannt sind diese Reisenden nach ihrem Schiff, der "Argo". Man mag ja von solchen Sagen und Mythen halten was man will, aber als Inspiration für Künstler haben diese schon immer herhalten müssen. Diesmal haben sich die progressiven Metaller von DEDICTED aus Belgien mit dem Stoff befasst. Und herausgekommen ist mit dem Album "Argonauts" wahrlich ein wilder Ritt auf dem Ozean der harten Klänge.
Gleich zu Beginn werden wir in den Song „The Revenant" hineingeworfen, der auch mal kurz die Reiseroute für die nächsten 40 Minuten vorgibt: harte, düstere Gitarrenriffs treffen auf rhythmisch sehr wechselreiches Drumming gepaart mit fiesen Shouts und aber auch klar gesungenen Refrains. Der zweite Song „Heretic" ist eine der eher straighten Nummern dieses Bollwerks, mutet in der Strophe gar etwas Metalcorelastig an und verwandelt sich im Refrain in einen astreinen Alternative Metalsong! Hier wird man zum ersten Mal den Namen DREAM THEATER im Kopf herumschwirren haben, der auch später noch das ein oder andere Mal als Vergleich herhalten muss. Nach guten vier Minuten verabschiedet sich der Song mit einem instrumentalen Abschluss um „Virgin Soil Epidemic" Platz zu machen. Hier darf auch der Gitarrist der französischen, artverwandten Band HARCIDE, Adrien Grosset, ein Solo zum Besten geben. Er ist auch verantwortlich für die Arrangements auf "Crystalline", "Heretic" und dem Abschlussbrecher „Argonauts". Das schon angesprochene "Crystalline" ist der längste und vielleicht auch schwierigste Song des Albums. Er kommt ganz ohne cleane Vocals aus und bleibt dadurch auch etwas unnahbar. Denn genau das Zusammenspiel der extremen Shouts von Fronter Mehdi und den cleanen Gesangspassagen von Drummer Jason machen aus den Songs von DEDICTED einen wahren Genuss für Freunde harter, progressiver Klänge. Die Nummer 6 auf diesem Album sollte man sich dann ganz dick anstreichen und in Dauerrepeat auf I-Pod und Co laufen lassen. „Rebirth" ist wohl der stärkste und ausgeglichenste Song auf "Argonauts". Die ersten zwei Minuten wird die Melodiekeule geschwungen, nur Synthiesounds und Gitarrenklänge untermalen den Gesang von Drummer Jason bevor die Hölle losbricht und Shouter Mehdi die Apokalypse beschwört. Im weiteren Verlauf wächst der Song zu einem wahren Monster von Metalsong heran, während sich Melodie und Härte die Hand geben. Sollten TOOL wirklich mal mehr mit den harten Klängen liebäugeln, so könnte sich das Ganze dann anhören! Das darauf folgende „A Darker Shade" ist wieder etwas geradliniger, aber nicht minder fantastisch, bevor uns der Titeltrack verabschiedet.
Die Songs halten sich Großteils im Midtempo-Bereich auf, was ihnen auch außerordentlich gut steht. Einige Soundspielerein sind klanglich vielleicht nicht ganz ausgereift, was auch auf die Produktion zurückzuführen ist, die sich aber insgesamt von der guten Sorte zeigt und den Songs den richtigen Stempel aufzudrücken vermag. Mit kleinen Abzügen somit versehen, sollte sich jeder Fan der oben genannten Bands mal dieses Wunderwerk zu Gemüte führen.

Shiver Records are known for signing record deals with relatively inexperienced but talented Belgian metal bands. And Dedicted are no exception as they are releasing their very first full-length album under the label. Just like some other bands the label has signed, Dedicted aren't a young band, as they are active since 1999, but it just took them quite a while and two demos before recording a full-length. But that it was worth the wait, and that this outfit if full of potential and freshness proves the fact that they are playing already at Graspop Metal Meeting, one of the biggest open-air metal festivals in Belgium and Europe.
What we have here is an album that definitely needs enough time to grow on you. The fact I start with a statement like that immediately stresses the intensity, complexity and versatility of this album. "Argonauts" definitely has a fresh and innovative sound, and that's really something, especially for the Belgian metal scene where this kind of metal is quite new (someone already called Dedicted the Belgian Textures). Dedicted are namely playing with a lot of technique that make the sound complex, as it is varying and surprising at the same time. Despite the sometimes daring calm/raging dynamic, intricate rhythm always stays the keyword on "Argonauts". It so happens that the pinpoint-sharp grunts of the main vocalist get masterly alternated with the clean and catchy vocals of the drummer, something I appreciated most on this album. In my eyes, "Argonauts" tells the story of the epic journey of the adventurous listener who learns to appreciate Dedicted's artificial structure, tangled with progressive riffs that symbolize the arduous riddles on your path. But before appreciating, you have to solve this riddles and evidently find this artificial structure, and this is where most people will get lost. But getting lost isn't always a bad thing though if you get lost in style, and this is were Dedicted is put in the picture. I will keep this review short as I feel it's getting hard to describe "Argonauts" further, moreover I believe that any supplementary elaboration will simply destroy the magnificence of Dedicted's complexness, and that's certainly not my intention.
As I said earlier, a lot of people will possibly be turned down after listening to this album. This is simply not an album that is suitable for the average metalhead. And without a doubt it needs time to grow on you whatsoever, but Dedicted's exiting sound can be bloody addictive afterwards, as I can tell. If you enjoyed the latest Meshuggah album a lot, Dedicted may be your new thing and then you can't hesitate to give this album a listen of course.

Until we received the "Argonauts" disc at the headquarters, we had never heard anything from Dedicted before. To be honest, it wasn't until we saw their name on the bill we knew this band existed. They started out in 1999 but it wasn't until earlier this year, they inked their first record deal. After two self-released demos, the Belgian metal outfit delivers with "Argonauts" their first full-length album.
The guys play a mixture of legendary bands Meshuggah and Soilwork and do this quite good! And while you are at it, throw in some Textures and Strapping Young Lad too. Their debut effort contains eight great and diverse songs containing strong screams from singer Mehdi and clean vocals from drummer Jason, cool sounding guitarsolos, great tempo-changes that made Meshuggah world famous and an epic touch, that's where we link Soilwork to this band. Highlights of the album are "Heretic" and the epic album closer/title track.
Although the artwork might not really fit the music, the production of this record is a real powerhouse. And for those who care about name dropping: the album was recorded by Xavier Carion (Channel Zero).
But without a doubt: 2008 is going to be the year of Dedicted. First, they score a spot in the Metal Dome on the Graspop festival and second, with their debut full-length, they deliver one hell of an album. All hail!

Dedicted est une formation Belge qui ont sortie leur premier album qui s'intitule "Argonauts" le 14 Avril dernier. Le titre de l'album fait référence aux héros dans la mythologie grecque qui ont fait ce fabuleux voyage épique sur l'«Argo».
Cet album est vraiment mon coup de cœur du moment . L'écoute de cet album vous permettra de faire l'expérience de ce voyage: riffs progressifs, sentiment que le navire est capturé par une forte tempête au milieu de l'océan, pivoter de gauche à droite et de haut en bas, accompagnés de voix de tonnerre, des pauses annonçant le calme avant la tempête... le vraie déluge.

DEDICTED has a unique sound to their music. They combine a few styles of music togteher, which include Thrash, Death, Black, Power, Progressive & Hardcore. There is a very full & strong sound that eminates from these guys. The music reminds me a little bit like MESHUGGAH mutated with THE FACELESS, LACUNA COIL, JOB FOR A COWBOY & IN FLAMES. This is a weird combination, but some how they pull it off. The vocals range from low end deep Death growls, mid ranged growls & screams, clean traditional vocals & then higher pitched melodic vocals. This is a band that must be heard to fully comprehend what they sound like!

Die Argonauten waren in der griechischen Mythologie die Gefährten von Jason, die ihn auf seiner Reise auf der "Argo" nach Kolchis und bei seiner Suche nach dem Goldenen Vlies begleiteten.
Gleichzeitig beziehen sich die Belgier DEDICTED dabei auf das "Schiff der Narren", welches gegen Ende des Mittelalters dazu benutzt worden sein soll, um Unliebsame und wahnsinnig gewordene Bürger aus den Städten Europas in die Ferne zu schippern.
Diese zwei starken Metaphern, nämlich die der Reise und die der Begleitumstände und Widrigkeiten, treten also gleich zu Beginn — und so ist es auch von der Band intendiert — deutlich in den Vordergrund.
Das Album als Reise in unbekannte, gefährliche Welten. Die Musik als das, was den Reisenden (also auch dem Hörer) widerfährt: Bedrohliche Stürme, die die Wellen hochpeitschen und mit voller Wucht an die Schiffswand schlagen lassen und es wie ein Spielzeug auf dem Wasser tanzen lassen.
Intoniert wird diese Urgewalt durch DEDICTEDs Mix aus groovigem Death Metal und progressiven Riffs. Auch wenn immer mal der Fuß aufs Gaspedal gedrückt wird, werden die Songs durchgehend vom wuchtigen Midtempo-Rhythmus bestimmt. Ebenso wuchtig fallen die Riffs mit zahlreichen Breaks aus, die durchgängig ziemlich düster gehalten sind, und damit konstrastiv den bedacht eingesetzten Melodielinien gegenüberstehen. Gestärkt wird dieser Kontrast durch den wechselseitigen Einsatz von aggressiv-heiseren Shouts und klarstimmigem Chorus. Zusätzlich angereichert wird das Klangspektrum durch dezente, sphärische Synthesizerflächen.
Während die Songs in ihrer Gesamtheit eher komplex arrangiert sind und durch häufige Rhythmen- und Tempiwechsel auffallen, bemüht sich die Band um eine klare und eingängige Strukturierung. Wilde, verquere Riffs, massive Moshparts und melodische Passagen sind da die Hauptzutaten.
DEDICTED streifen damit die Gefilde, in denen z.B. auch ihre Kollegen von AXAMENTA oder die Schweden MESHUGGAH aktiv sind. Nach fast zehn Jahren Existenz und einigen Demos haben sie nun ein recht überzeugendes Debüt in Sack und Tüten gebracht, was auf der Ebene der Komposition noch ein paar Schwächen aufweist. Sie müssen nicht eingängiger oder komplexer werden, aber die Songs könnten noch einen gewissen Kick vertragen, etwas, was die einzelnen, coolen Riffs und Songbestandteile noch besser miteinander verbindet. DEDICTED haben nämlich gute Ideen, die aber ihre Wirkung nicht immer optimal entfalten.
Wer wissen will, wie das Album und die Band tickt, sollte mal auf ihrer Myspace-Seite vorbeischauen, und sich den Kracher "The Revenant" anhören. Starkes Album!

O título do álbum remete para os heróis na mitologia grega que fora estabelecido em uma jornada épica sobre a "Argo". Ao mesmo tempo, remete para o "Navio de tolos" que se pensa ter sido navegam nas águas da Europa no final da Idade Média, transportando os loucos de distância de cidades que já não poderia lidar com eles. A ouvir este álbum deixá-lo-á experiência de ambas as viagens, ao mesmo tempo: riffs Progressivos, sentimento como se o navio é capturado por uma forte tempestade no meio do oceano, rotação da esquerda para a direita e para cima e para baixo, acompanhado com vocais como trovocadas; coros a soar como o olho da tempestade e de pausa, anunciando a tempestade. Com este álbum os Dedicted estão pronto para lançar a sua viagem para trazer a sua loucura para os loucos das hordas de Metal em todo o globo. Esteja atento a Dedicted para a ancoragem na sua cidade!

Upon initial listen I found Belgium's Dedicted rather ordinary, but their debut album has grown on me a fair bit. A slightly progressive take on Meshuggah-inspired metalcore, Argonauts has its fair share of catchy grooves and memorable songwriting. While not particularly original, this band is working within the metalcore genre in ways that are different from what is currently the norm. Sure, there's quite a bit of the dreaded clean singing here, but at least it sounds more appropriately metal in context rather than emo/pop. Argonauts has been produced wonderfully, and at forty-two minutes is a fairly tight and breezy listen. There's just enough here of what I like in metalcore for Dedicted to be a reasonably strong proposition, provided they continue to develop and push their sound forward.
From the moment "The Revenant" kicks off, it's pretty obvious that Dedicted are well versed in their Meshuggah collection, having appropriated that band's machine-like groove quite effectively. But it soon becomes apparent that these guys have broader tastes and have paid attention to what the likes of Textures and The Ocean have been doing as well. Lead throat Mehdi's one-dimensional snarl is a little monotonous but gets the job done, whereas the clean vocals of drummer Jason have a decent hard rock/metal styling that are convincing for the most part (the all too poppy refrain of "Heretic" being the main exception). None of the eight tracks on Argonauts are anything less than solid, but there are a few that really hit "the zone." "A Darker Shade" is the album's most intense song with a genuinely raging momentum, while the closing title track features the most convincing growled/clean vocal interplay and some beautifully atmospheric guitar.
Argonauts is a strong first effort from Dedicted, and an enjoyable listen. These guys have impressive technicality, and display a welcome appreciation for dynamics as well as an aptitude for a strong hook. Dedicted aren't particularly innovative or outstanding as yet but are successfully combining their influences into tight, polished songs. They've also got their bases well covered in terms of musicianship and production, so there's little holding them back. If your listening habits cover metalcore, the Neur-Isis school and Meshuggah, Dedicted represent an interesting and tasteful meeting of these styles and are well worth a listen.

Lords of metal
Ondanks dat dit 'Argonauts' de debuut cd is, de band nauwelijks optredens heeft gedaan en/of naamsbekendheid heeft, staat het Belgische Dedicted wel al op het affiche van Graspop. Wie zo iets presteert, moet toch wat in petto hebben …
De band presenteert zich met acht afwisselende moderne tracks en speelt thrash c.q. death met een dosis progressieve elementen. Technisch vernuft, complexiteit, Meshuggah-achtige ritmiek denderen voorbij, zonder dat er daarbij direct in extremen wordt vervallen. Echte diepzinnige experimenten blijven achterwege en toch is geen nummer is hetzelfde. 'Argonauts' staat bol van verscheidenheid aan muzikale invalshoeken, maar weet toch goed de balans te bewaren. Je zou voorzichtig kunnen zeggen dat het album een beetje in de lijn van Textures ligt.
En behalve dat dit als compliment opgevat moet worden, is het eigenlijk ook één van de weinige kritiekpunten. Er zijn al zoveel progressieve kanjers (o.a. Devin Townsend, Gojira, Hacride, Meshuggah, Textures) waarmee Dedicted de competitie aan moet gaan, dat het niet mee zal vallen er echt uit te springen. Maar dat de potentie aanwezig is, mag wel duidelijk zijn. Geef dit vijftal de tijd en dan gaan we hier vast en zeker nog veel meer van horen, want wie een dusdanig afwisselend, bont en gedetailleerd album weet neer te zetten, komt van goeden huize.
